DON’T FORGET TO CLAIM YOUR FREE 30-MINUTE DISCOVERY SESSION!
What is a Discovery Session?
The goal of your discovery session is to give you the opportunity to meet your prospective teacher and ensure that you both feel it’s a good fit for working together. We understand how disappointing it can be to commit to lessons, only to realise partway through that the connection isn’t quite right.
During the session, you’ll also have the chance to experience your teacher’s style firsthand — getting a real sense of their teaching approach, communication style, and how they tailor lessons to each student. It’s a great way to see if their methods resonate with you before committing to ongoing lessons.
The session further allows your teacher to get to know you personally, learn about your previous musical experiences, and discuss any goals or aspirations you may have.
All of this is designed to help establish a harmonious, productive working relationship right from day one!
You can book your discovery session online or if you’d prefer, you can reach out to us directly on 01883338330, and select option 2!

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are the answers to some of our most Frequently Asked Quetions. If you can’t find the answer you are seeking here, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We are here to help!
Do you teach children?
Absolutely! Music is a tremendously enriching and enjoyable extracurricular pursuit that not only nurtures a child’s talents, interests and passions but also has a profound impact on their cognitive and emotional development.
While there is no strict age requirement, we generally recommend that children begin taking instrumental music lessons around the age of 6-7 years old. However, this is a flexible guideline and can vary based on several factors:
1) The choice of instruments, taking into consideration the child’s size (piano is often a great starting piano for young children).
2) The child’s level of interest.
3) The willingness to dedicate time to practice regularly.
If you are uncertain about whether music lessons would be suitable for your child, please reach out to us. We’d be delighted to have a conversation with you or invite you for a discovery session so one of our teachers can help you make an informed decision.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, leading to the need to cancel a scheduled lesson. Our cancellation policy is as follows:
- We kindly request a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for any lesson cancellations, regardless of the reason.
- If you’re unable to provide the required 48 hours’ notice, you have the option to reschedule the lesson within 7 days of the originally scheduled time to avoid forfeiting it. This may result in having two lessons in one week.
- If you can’t provide the 48 hours’ notice, cannot reschedule within the same week, or if your teacher is unavailable for a rescheduled session, the lesson will be forfeited, and the full lesson cost will be due.
- Any cancellations made on the same day as the scheduled lesson will result in automatic forfeiture of the lesson, and full charges will apply to any makeup lessons booked.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation regarding our cancellation policy.
Do I need to commit to a number of lessons?
You have the flexibility to schedule as many or as few lessons as you like. However, we believe that learning a new instrument requires dedication. To support your commitment, we offer block booking options at discounted rates.
If you prefer to pay monthly, that’s absolutely fine too!
How long will my lessons be?
You can chose the duration of your lesson from 3 options – 45 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes.
The only exception to this is for Music Theory and GCSE Music lessons, where lessons are available in 60 or 90 minute durations only.
Do you offer one off coaching to help me prepare for an exam/audition?
Absolutely!
We have helped lots of people with one-off coaching sessions to help them prepare for an audition! Just let us know when you enquire and we will definitely be able to help you!
What happens if I don't like it half-way through a block booking?
To give you a chance to meet your teacher and experience our sessions before making any financial commitment, we extend a warm invitation to all new students for a complimentary 30-minute discovery session. Our aim is to prevent any unexpected situations and ensure you’re comfortable with your choice.
We’re here to offer support and assistance, so if you ever encounter any concerns or issues, we encourage you to discuss them with your teacher initially. If you still find any matters unresolved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office at any time.
However, it’s important to note that if you’ve enrolled in one of our Block Booking options, these are non-cancellable and non-refundable.
Is there an upper age limit?
Definitely not! Take the plunge and book your Discovery Session now!
Are your teachers and staff DBS checked?
All of our teachers have been checked and passed by the Disclosure Barring Service (replacing the old Criminal Records Bureau) for their suitability to work with children or vulnerable adults.
Are you insured?
Yes – the safety and security of our students and teachers is of the utmost importance to us.
We hold Public Liability Insurance and conduct regular Risk Assessments to ensure we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and sound at all times!
Do you offer group lessons?
At present, we exclusively offer one-to-one vocal and instrumental tuition to ensure our full attention is dedicated to you and your specific needs.
This is so each student gets the benefit of our knowledge and expertise on a 1:1 basis and is able to get the most value and benefit from their sessions.
If, however, you are from another organisation interested in having one of our teachers provide group tuition at your location as part of a broader set of activities, please feel free to reach out to us. We would be more than happy to assist you!
Do you offer home visits?
Currently, we only offer home visits for Piano and Saxophone lessons.
If you have special requirements and would like to discuss home visits for any of our other instruments, please contact us. We will do our best to accommodate your needs.
Do I really have to take exams?
We’re excited to offer you the opportunity to take graded exams in your chosen instrument, but here at Andrew Jay’s School of Music, we want to emphasise that it’s entirely optional!
What sets us apart from most other music schools is our unique status as a registered digital exam center for Trinity College London. This means we have an intimate and deep understanding of the exam syllabuses.
We often incorporate the graded syllabuses into our teaching because they provide a valuable framework for planning lessons and fostering a progressive approach to enhancing your skills, knowledge, and playing abilities.
But don’t worry, every lesson is tailored to you and your individual needs! Your experience with us is as unique as you are.
For more information about graded exams, please visit our Graded Exam page or simply have a chat with your teacher. We’re here to support your musical journey!
What styles of music do you teach?
Our teachers are highly versatile and knowledgeable, capable of instructing various styles and musical disciplines.
During your discovery session, take the opportunity to have a conversation with your teacher about your musical preferences and goals. If, during this discussion, your teacher believes that another teacher might be better suited to meet your specific needs, they will let you know.
In such cases, we’ll be happy to arrange an alternative discovery session with a different teacher who can better align with your musical journey.
How regularly should I have a lesson?
Opting for a once or twice weekly schedule at a consistent day and time is ideal! When paired with a strong and steady practice routine, you’ll start seeing incredible progress and results!
Do I need to bring anything with me to my lessons?
As you continue with your sessions, we’ll be offering you a range of valuable tools and resources to support your learning and practice. These may include sheet music, lyric sheets, exam materials, books, and more.
To make the most of our guidance, we encourage you to bring your own copies of these materials. We often annotate these copies to help you practice effectively and provide reminders for key points to focus on during your practice sessions. Your personal copies will become valuable companions on your musical journey!
